  • "The recognition of Israel as a Jewish state..."

    A pernicious requirement.

Israel is the world's only predominantly Jewish state, with a population estimated in May 2010 to be 7,602,400  people, of whom 6,051,000 are Jews.  Arab citizens of Israel form the country's second-largest ethnic group,  which includes Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Samaritans. According to the May 2010 population estimate, including 300,000 non-citizen Arabs living in East Jerusalem, this minority numbers 1,551,400.

            Religions:
            Jewish 75.5%, Muslim 16.8%, Christian 2.1%, Druze 1.7%,

  • I read the title as "The recognition of Ireland as a Jewish State..."

(it's late and I did have a glass of wine earlier)

    I don't understand 'a pernicious requirement'.

  • The News Story

It's "pernicious" because the goal of the demand is to wreck the talks even before they begin. No one could accept that "requirement".

About 25% of the population of Israel isn't "Jewish" in either sense (ethnicity or religion) of the word.

The guy's sneaky and nasty and of "mauvaise foi".

  • Oh. I haven't been paying very much attention to the news lately. I thought Israel already was a Jewish state. It always amazes me that people think they're so different from one another. It's like they want to be different and better and more valuable than the other person. Religion seems to be the great separator.

  • I'm not sure about the word 'separator.' Maybe 'divider' would be better. I just thank God I'm Catholic. (that was a joke)

  • I don't see the point. If it's a real democracy, the sheer numbers should ensure peace of mind for the Jews living in Israel, since they are an overwhelming majority. Then again, I see the point. It is well known that they don't reproduce themselves as fast as the other non-Jewish Israelis, more so that immigrating Jews from the diaspora is something now having reached the bottom of the barrel (cette source est maintenant tarie). So basically, they are setting the table for an apprehended situation expected in the mid to long term. It's not very democratic as per motives go, but they are not worse than all the others who drape themselves in democracy, with end motives hardly any better. Iraqi oil smells better if it's drilled in a pseudo-democratic regime.

As per moi is concerned, at 60 and having had all my adult life plagued with this never-ending Middle-East melodrama, whenever I now hear or read "peace process" somewhere, I switch channels. Boring repetitive humour is not my cup of tea.
